It turns out that the first book of this trilogy, _Daggerstar_, and this novel are running parallel to the second trilogy, or books four and/or five of the _Warlands_ Series--depending on how one views those previous works. This novel focuses on Orrin Blackheart's and High Priestess Elizabeth's romance and trials. The story has Vaughan's signature deft kennings, character development and humor sprinkled throughout. A VERY satisfying read.

Her author's note at the end of the novel is one of the most amusing I've ever read and has me hoping that she displays more of the humor and wit in further works.

I like magic and this story has plenty of it and good characters. She has another series which is very good.
As a second book in a trilogy this is a good book. Not as good as the first, but carries on the story. I recommend this book
Wish this series had way more books to it.

All of the books by this author are fantastic! I binged from the first, Warprize, and have read every single one right after the other. Great story line, and every single one keeos you coming back for the next.
I really loved this book. Can't wait to read the next one. I really like this author and all her books so far. The first books I got were marketed as romance novels but this author is really a fantasy writer that just happens to have a romance story woven in. Her fantasy world building is just too good to limit her to the realm of fantasy romance novelist.
I'm very much enjoying this series, wish someone had explained that there is a backstory to the last "Warprize" series book that is told in this trilogy. (I like to read books in order;). Even with the confusion though, the story is well written, the world building is masterful, and the characters come to life and make you care about them.
