This is a hard review to write, because I Feel like my main complaint with this book is the fact that it was a little hard to follow, big dramatic moments seemed a little spoiled by non sequiturs and "duh of course that's the reason" feelings due to transparent writing, and just, in general, weird moments that could use editing (for example: "I knew Asian magic, there were two Korean girls in community college. it was hard work etc." like what is that supposed to MEAN??????????)

But also it's hard for me to come up with specific examples, because I read this over the course of several days.

BUT. The world building was very, very cool, I think that M is being set up as a Cinderella and if she's not a Princess I'll eat my tiara. And I love Ari's character development, Evangeline rocks, and Grimm and M's big moment at the end was super bad-a$$.

But it definitely feels like a first novel, in the sense that it was disjointed (as I mentioned above) and the writing feels a little immature--not YOUNG, exactly, just unpracticed (like the weird racism moment i mentioned above, as well as several attempts at pathos w/ Marissa being in love with Liam).

If you HAVEN'T read this book, I think you would enjoy it tons. And it would be super enjoyable to tear it apart as well. But lovingly, of course. And I'm gonna buy the sequel because, hey, solid urban fantasy (even semi-solid, "concept better than execution" ) books are hard to find. If anything this feels like a stopgap until Seanan McGuire decides that the Indexing series needs another installment. 3.5 stars, really, but 4.0 for getting me to buy the sequel.

the whole series give you a whole new take on fairy godmother tales
I thoroughly enjoyed Free Agent by J.C. Nelson. I was kept spell bound by the rich, if sometimes mind bending world she had created. The heroine, Marissa, is a tough as nails, no nonsense character who attracts disaster like it's going out of fashion. The secondary characters were intriguing and I hope are fleshed out more in further novels. Would recommend this to any fan of the urban fairy tale genre.
I listened to this via audio book and I was immediately taken with how strong the world building was. I was sucked into the world, and loved how the main character was not your average girl. She wasn't your gorgeous girl that everyone falls in love with, but an average girl who kicks some serious arse. The plot was so intriguing as it was like a bunch of short stories that were woven together to create the overarching main arc. I also enjoyed the fact that this was an adult fantasy without explicit scenes. The romance was there, and enjoyable and real.

I don't want to add spoilers - this was a great read.
Highly recommend. The world-building was fantastic, and filled with so many interesting twists on well-known fairy tale traditions, while keeping enough of the core tenets so they remained recognizable.
Marissa is both flawed and likable, and I'm excited to see her move forward and reevaluate her Happily Ever After. I found her relatable, and thought her voice carried the story very well. And I really want to know more of her backstory.
Ari and Grimm were great secondary characters, both of whom felt real and fleshed out. It was refreshing to see a princess who had no interest in finding her prince, and I think her character arc will be interesting to watch in future books.
Short version fun read, developed characters, and fascinating world-building.
Paranormal is a tougher sell for me these days as the market feels SO saturated with books that make me feel like I've read them before. Free Agent did NOT disappoint me this way. Marissa is bada** and the book is too. It gave me everything I love with fantasy--a little snark, a lot of action, and more awesome one-liners than you can shake a stick at, all with punchy dialogue and tight writing. I'll definitely be picking up more by this author!
First book in the series that takes you on a fun, exciting ride involving all sorts of characters you'll love. This series became another favorite of mine with misunderstood princesses to professionals who want to be taken as professionals and wolves. If you have an appreciation of the wacky you'll love this series
What struck me in this series is that there is no concern over who gets killed. In most Urban Fantasy books I have read, the goal is to protect the "civilians" and to attack the "villains". The villains are very clear and are constantly mentioned as "bad guys". In the Grimm Agency world...everyone is fair game to kill. The people who drop by the agency to do business have to find their own way out when evil happens...and if they aren't out in time, they will be attacked by vicious snakes who protect the building at night. Bullets are for werewolves and cheerleaders (what about Buffy the Vampire Slayer?). The heroine kills on purpose and by accident and when she does kill by accident she isn't sorry about it and gets upset at those who call her a "murderer". Hellhounds are turned loose to snack on whatever pit bull might happen by. Interns are killed repeatedly even though the killing could be prevented. A mermaid who drops by the agency becomes a sushi dinner. The killing is constant and happens to friend and foe alike without really registering on the heroine or the Agency. She and the Agency only have sympathy for their own problems and seems oblivious to the destruction they leave around them.

That said, the novel is kept amazing light, with a lot of joking around. The action is intense as huge problems build on huge problems which drive the heroine forward and keep the reader engaged in the story. Despite the indiscriminate killing, the novel kept my attention and I will reread it. And, having read more of it, given the heroine's background of abandonment and pain, it makes sense that she is narcissistic and insensitive to the pain of others.
