I enjoyed this novel but enjoyed two of the short stories in this series more. GREY and GREY'S GHOST have a feel of Kipling and Dickens about them which this novel lacks. Instead, it is a typical Mercedes Lackey fantasy, but set in London instead of some alien world or universe. Being a typical Mercedes Lackey fantasy is not a bad thing as she is a master of the genre. There is not a lot of action in this one. There are accounts of the trials of those campaigning for women's suffrage and women's rights in general; the difficulties and prejudice faced by female physicians; surgery and the use of magic for healing; the hard, unpleasant lives of London's poor; romance; a society of elemental masters masquerading as a London gentlemen's club; selkies and other magical creatures and, of course, villains and heroes. There are a couple of things which don't seem quite right such as Maya, who is trying to hide from a deadly enemy, taking a very public role in a womens' suffrage march. Then, in the end, the deadly enemy who threatens Maya, the elemental masters and the British Empire proves to be somewhat less deadly and powerful than billed. Not Lackey's best, but still good, this is probably 3 stars compared to her other work, but 4 stars compared to fantasy writing as a whole.Tags : The Serpent's Shadow (Elemental Masters, Book 1) [Mercedes Lackey] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The first novel in Mercedes Lackey's magical Elemental Masters series reimagines the fairy tale Snow White in a richly-detailed alternate Edwardian England Maya Witherspoon lived most of the first twenty-five years of her life in her native India. Have you read The Fire Rose? If yes, do not read this book. It follows the exact same formula and as soon as all the characters are introduced you can see the ending. There are no new twists or surprises.
I was highly disappointed.
If you have not read The Fire Rose, this would not be such a bad read. Simple, light story with simple, light characters. The good people are only good and the bad people are only bad. No gray areas. Still a little boring for me but nothing wrong with the writing.
I love this alternate world, victorian fantasy series. Dr Maya, her servants/family, and odd group of pets, have come to London to escape whatever or whomever killed her parents. She is befriended by an elemental mage, and things get interesting! Romance, suspense, magic, humor, love, gods, good vs. Evil.
This is the first of Mercedes Lackey's Elemental Masters series. Although there are often connections between the books in this series it is not essential to read them in chronological order, but I was trapped by this first one, and have been eagerly grabbing the rest as they have been published. This story centers on a doctor from India, working in Edwardian London, dealing with echos from her Indian culture. As always with Mercedes Lackey's books the characters and settings are vividly described, so you are drawn into their lives and get to know them and believe in them. There are some pretty grim moments, but they are essential to the story, so bear with them. As you would expect the doctor triumphs in the end, but her adventures along the way will keep you glued to her story.
All Maya ever wanted was to be a physician and to help people. Driven from her home in India after the deaths of her parents, she seeks her dreams in London. Unfortunately the prejudices of British society in 1909 are firmly set against her. As both a woman and a half Indian, she can finds herself the target of racist and sexist bigotry. As if that wasn't enough, it appears that the evil that drove her out of India has followed her to London.
Once again Mercedes Lackey has woven an interesting tale of magic, love and intrigue. The Elemental Masters series never fails to bring the world of early 20th century Britain to life.
Enjoyable introduction to the Elemental Masters series, but not as compelling as her Valdemar books. It does give a good intro into elemental magic and the characteristics of the powers and magicians who wield them. There are many spaces, pages, where little action or story and plot development occurs. But overall it was an enjoyable read.
This is a story of discrimination and discovery for a young woman in Victorian/Edwardian England. Maya Witherspoon is a half caste Anglo Indian who trained as a Doctor in India and has now come to England to escape the vengeance of her sorceress Aunt and her Thugee cult. It seems no one wants her to be a doctor and there is the added problem of her own magic inherited from her father. Her struggles to become accepted as a Doctor in an antagonistic medical milieu, the racial discrimination are handled well and there is good sense of the change in the air of England of that time. Maya also has magical helpers and a cast of characters straight out of Dickens to help and hinder her. A truly enjoyable read, I was swept along on this adventure, did not want it to end.
This is the first "real" Elemental Masters story for me, Fire Rose and Reserved for the Cat are not really in the same timeline. It's based on Snow White, but except for two very clear references, this isn't something that's obvious. I love retelling of fairytales so I whooped a bit for those references, but if one doesn't like fairytales it's not a big thing. Protagonists believable and the setting of the story is great, as the prewar era with suffragetts and Indian "homecomers" are all relevant to the story.
