I read this book based on a friend’s recommendation. It’s a religious satire, which focuses on the second coming of God and Jesus’ subsequent inferiority complex. It starts of with Jesus (nicknamed “Josh” in the book) in therapy with Freud, and the book follows Josh’s attempt to solidify his standing on earth with the impending return of his father. He does so with his companion, Lucifer (“Lou”) who incessantly needles and temps Josh at every turn.The book is very funny and well written. I found myself laughing out loud and, at times, looking up definitions (“putti,” anyone?). Be forewarned-- the content may be controversial to those who are quite religious. As a born and raised Catholic who attends church on a semi-regular basis, I can see how this book may be perceived as being offensive. However, I was able to enjoy it thoroughly as a work of entertaining fiction.

As an amateur student of religions, I found the biting satire in this work quite refreshing. Religion could use a dose of irreverence, and Whitaker delivers! It takes some getting used to to see Jesus, whom we are used to holding in very high esteem, at times come across as a petulant, spoiled child, complete with a sense of entitlement. It's almost a coming-of-age story. The humor is at times inverted, at other times introspective, and nearly always with sharp teeth.

What an enjoyable read. 'Into Temptation' tells the “real” story of Joshua Nazareth, known to his followers as Jesus, and revels in what Christians (and Jesus) have misunderstood for centuries. Filled with fame, flashing lights, and the sinful streets of Vegas, New York, Paris, and Rome, readers follow Jesus through his modern day trials and tribulations of finding out who he really is. Funny, heartbreaking, yet always suspenseful, this politico-religious satire will keep you turning pages to find out exactly how these religious figures travel from the City back to Earth and what in the world they’re doing here.
The first chapters work to establish a world that requires readers to get down with science-fiction. Readers must be invested to understand Whitaker's world, but it pays off. Every character is flush with secrets and desires. The entire world is a bit secretive, but this is what keeps the suspense for chapters to come.
The novel is not only filled with macho-characters (yes, we even get to meet Satan in the flesh, lovingly known as “Lou” by his fans). The story also introduces us to a number of powerful female characters that carry much of the narrative in their own right. Commendations to Whitaker for re-envisioning such a powerful, well-known story, and serving it up with a high dose of glamour.
If you're a fan of sacrilegious prodings and looking for a unique perspective on biblical characters I think you'll find this enjoyable. The first couple chapters must establish the contention and the "universe" which feels a bit more of board meeting descriptions than world building, but once you understand where you are the character development begins and you find yourself spun again and again with new concepts of biblical characters you believed you knew.
Everyone is far more complex than the standard good vs evil archetypes. The conflicts arise most from contentions of self between the characters. What does it mean to be God? Lucifer? Jesus? Mary?.... And then who are these people outside of the personas faith has assigned them? And more importantly, where are they going (and where might they take us as they do)?
I really enjoyed this book. I'm very glad a friend recommended that I read it. Some of the philosophical arguments presented in the book align with the way I think which is probably why I liked it so much. Everyone likes it when folks and/or books/TV/movies agree with them. I'm not a super religious person and I expect someone who is might not like this book but that shouldn't stop you from reading it. Challenge oneself I always say.
As a non-religious person, I have to admit I really liked the character of Lucifer aka "Lou". Rather than present him as the source of all evil on this planet, he's presented more as a thinking person's devil. He annoys his friend "Josh" quite a bit for good reasons.
The plot was well done and fast paced. The book never bogged down in any parts with excess exposition. It flowed nicely. I wish some of my attempts at writing were this well-paced. Made for easy and yet challenging reading. I just finished a much longer book that wasn't paced as well and I swear it took me forever to slog through it. No slogging through this book.
I look forward to whatever the author comes up with next.
What if there was no heaven or hell? No Jesus, Lucifer, Virgin Mary, or even God? At least not in the way we have come to know them? In Whitaker’s Biblical satire, heaven and hell are not ultimate resting places of eternal suffering or peace and these biblical characters are not one-dimensional beings passively existing within the standard good or evil frame of duality. "Into Temptation" sets the second coming of Jesus Christ in a modern world where reason and self-responsibility are the necessary tools for salvation. Can Jesus liberate himself from his personal and collective ‘story’ as savior that keeps him trapped in a limited mythology? If so, he has a chance at happiness, love, and a life lived on his own terms.
The familiar is made new again as the dynamic characters navigate a world ready for the end of dogma and mythology and the beginning of an era of self-awareness. This entertaining read intermingles philosophy and theology in a way that encourages the reader to think for themselves. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to revisit these characters in a more modern and relateable way.
This book was recommended to me by a friend. I thought this book was really well written. As someone who was born and raised Catholic with a very strong faith I was able to enjoy the book as a funny, satirical work of fiction. Keep and open mind and read, read, read this book.
